For me, longboarding is a form of relaxation and release. It's also my workout and fun activity packed in to one! It keeps me fit without going to the gym, I sweat a lot for hours and hours while actually having a good time.
If you're interested in longboarding, or any form of skating, get started on it. Trust me, you won't regret it!
This is what I got myself for my birthday, my second customized longboard.
(I just don't get it why Sector 9 decided to discontinue their best-selling version of the board??)
Luckily, after days of searching, I found Boards on Nord (www.nordboards.com) shop that still has red Paradiso's in stock. Good thing all other specific parts that I need for my board are available too, and most importantly they ship overseas. So, I didn't waste any time, ordered and customized my board. And just in time for my birthday, it's already at my doorstep!
Sector 9 Paradiso (Red) Longboard
Specs:
Sector 9 Paradiso 40.5" deck
Venom Super Carve bushings (81a)
Paris V2 trucks (50 degrees - 180mm) with shock pads
Sector 9 Skiddles longboard wheels (70mm - 78a multi color)
Bones Reds bearings
I've been drooling over this board for weeks at the Daddies Boardshop site (www.daddiesboardshop.com), read up all the reviews I could find all over the net about this board and then one day when I finally decided that this is the perfect board that I'd give myself for my upcoming birthday, they were already SOLD OUT!
I was shocked. I didn't think that it would be sold out that fast. I mean it has just been released a few months ago.
This specific version, the best-selling red Paradiso, was the first one to be sold out at Daddies Boardshop then quickly followed by it's brother, the yellow Paradiso. So, I messaged Daddies Boardshop on Facebook and ask them when will they have new stocks of the Red Paradiso. They quickly replied and informed me that Sector 9 will only be reproducing yellow Paradiso's and that the red version has been discontinued. Which means that it will be a lot harder for me to find other shops that sell red Paradiso's because it is now a rare deck.

Surfing, no matter what level you're in, is like a drug. You always long for that feeling, that rush, and you keep coming back for more.
So, just as how the surfers back in the 1950's got the idea to surf the streets when the waves were flat, it's pretty much the same how it dawned on me to get into longboarding primarily to have more shred time on land and improve my surfing through muscle memory. This method is also used by Surf Coaches around the world. [Source: SurfScience.com]
First off, choosing a board
After doing some research, reading forums and customer reviews from renowned board shops, I finally found the perfect beginner board for my needs. And behold, the Pintail 40 from Original Skateboards.
These two videos sealed the deal and made me fall in love with the Pintail 40:
My Setup
- Pintail 40 deck with Original laser cut grip
- Original S8 200mm trucks
- Abec 11 Flashbacks 70mm 81a
- Bones Super Reds Bearings
I picked Pintail 40 over the other sizes (37", 42", and 46") because it's just the right size for my height (5'5") and weight (120lbs).
It has very surfy feel due to Original's patented S8 spring-loaded trucks. They have 3 tension springs to choose from, Black is the softest, Red is medium which they say is perfect if you're transitioning from regular longboard trucks to spring-loaded trucks, and White is the hardest which is recommended for heavier riders.
Abec 11 Flashbacks 81a are well known for their buttery smooth slide, but still soft enough at 81a duro and have that grip when you need them.
Lastly, for my bearings I chose the ever reliable Bones bearings.
I'm really happy with this new found sport, it's a good way to cross-train and improve my surfing while on land but more importantly I'm loving the sport itself. I'm actually looking on building a new board set up for Freeride/Freestyle real soon. Stoked!

It's summer time! Me and my whole family will be having a 4-day vacation in the island of Boracay. I have my ever reliable Sony NEX-5T camera for dry land snaps. So, I thought it's time to buy another camera suitable for water and action shots.
I had 2 choices, GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition vs. the newly released Sony Action Cam AS100V.
Although Sony's Action Cam is a pretty good action camera and is comparable to Hero3+ black, in my opinion GoPro is still superior at this point and a number of reviews between these two cameras will back it up. Click here for Gizmodo's Sony Action Cam AS100V Review: GoPro Finally Has Some Competition
Since I already have the Sony NEX-5T for my vivid and low light shots, and I need a camera for water sports, has a lot of accessories already available in the market, a stable stable operating system and wider compatibility with mobile devices/smart phones, without a doubt, GoPro won my heart!

My friends and I planned to take this trip to Baler for one thing, SURFING. Most of us are beginners and some are first-timers. I started to learn how to surf 3 years ago at the Philippine Surfing Academy on a wave pool at Club Manila East.
We decided not to drive and just take the bus to and from Baler. We chose to ride the JoyBus, executive coach line of Genesis Transport Service, Inc. It's the most comfortable way to commute to Baler. The seats are huge and comfortable, it has a bus attendant, free snacks with bottled water, clean blanket, an on-board comfort room and has no stopovers which means you'll reach Baler faster than most provincial buses. You need to book in advance though, especially during peak season, if you wanna make sure you don't miss your trip to Baler.
Our bus left the Cubao terminal at 1:30am and arrived at the Baler terminal at around 6 in the morning.
Touchdown Baler! |
From the bus terminal we took a 3-minute tricycle ride to Aliya Surf Camp.

As soon as we arrived at the resort (a gazillion pictures and selfies after, that is!) we quickly head off to the beach to grab a bite, we're starving!

TIP: If you're really starving and if you don't wanna wait for literally an hour for your order to be served, go for the buffet.
Once we're loaded up, we didn't waste any time and head back to our hotel to get ready for our first Baler surfing sesh.
Yeah, we're just so stoked! |
Now, for some quick surfing lessons on the sand before the real thing...
