Take a break...

For me, longboarding is a form of relaxation and release. It's also my workout and fun activity packed in to one! It keeps me fit without going to the gym, I sweat a lot for hours and hours while actually having a good time.

If you're interested in longboarding, or any form of skating, get started on it. Trust me, you won't regret it!

From Surfing to Longboarding

Surfing, no matter what level you're in, is like a drug. You always long for that feeling, that rush, and you keep coming back for more.

So, just as how the surfers back in the 1950's got the idea to surf the streets when the waves were flat, it's pretty much the same how it dawned on me to get into longboarding primarily to have more shred time on land and improve my surfing through muscle memory. This method is also used by Surf Coaches around the world. [Source: SurfScience.com]

First off, choosing a board

After doing some research, reading forums and customer reviews from renowned board shops, I finally found the perfect beginner board for my needs. And behold, the Pintail 40 from Original Skateboards.

These two videos sealed the deal and made me fall in love with the Pintail 40:

My Setup

  • Pintail 40 deck with Original laser cut grip
  • Original S8 200mm trucks
  • Abec 11 Flashbacks 70mm 81a
  • Bones Super Reds Bearings

I picked Pintail 40 over the other sizes (37", 42", and 46") because it's just the right size for my height (5'5") and weight (120lbs).

It has very surfy feel due to Original's patented S8 spring-loaded trucks. They have 3 tension springs to choose from, Black is the softest, Red is medium which they say is perfect if you're transitioning from regular longboard trucks to spring-loaded trucks, and White is the hardest which is recommended for heavier riders.

Abec 11 Flashbacks 81a are well known for their buttery smooth slide, but still soft enough at 81a duro and have that grip when you need them.

Lastly, for my bearings I chose the ever reliable Bones bearings.
Bottom line

I'm really happy with this new found sport, it's a good way to cross-train and improve my surfing while on land but more importantly I'm loving the sport itself. I'm actually looking on building a new board set up for Freeride/Freestyle real soon. Stoked!

SURFING BALER 2014

My friends and I planned to take this trip to Baler for one common thing, surfing. Most of us are beginners and some are first-timers. I started to learn how to surf 3 years ago at the Philippine Surfing Academy on a wave pool at Club Manila East.

(sorry for the low resolution pic, this was taken by my friend  using a 4MP digicam i think)

So moving back to 2014, me and my friends decided not to drive and just take the bus to and from Baler. We chose to ride the JoyBus, executive coach line of Genesis Transport Service, Inc. It's the most comfortable way to commute. It’s like flying first class on a luxury plane. It has a bus attendant, free snacks and bottled water, clean blanket, an on-board comfort room and has no stopovers which means you'll reach Baler faster than most provincial buses. You need to book in advance though, especially during peak season, if you wanna make sure you don't miss your trip to Baler.

Our bus left the Cubao terminal at 1:30am and arrived at the Baler terminal at around 6 in the morning.

Touchdown Baler!

From the bus terminal we took a 3-minute tricycle ride to Aliya Surf Camp & Resort

As soon as we arrived at the resort (a zillion pictures and selfies after, that is!) we quickly head off to the beach to grab something to eat, we're starving!

Breakfast at Hungry Surfer by Bay's Inn

We had a hefty buffet breakfast at the Hungry Surfer. The place was really nice, the food is good and affordable. Quick tip: If you're really starving and if you don't wanna wait for literally a couple of hours for your order to be served, go for the buffet.

Once we're fully recharged, we didn't waste any time and head back to our hotel to get ready for our first Baler surfing sesh.

Yeah, we're just so stoked!

Now, for some quick surfing lessons on the sand before the real thing...

Sennheiser MOMENTUM: Premium Sound On-the-Go

What Hi-Fi's 2013 Best Portable Headphones
(at £200-£300)
"Smooth, punchy, refined all-rounders – and great-looking too."
– WHAT HI-FI?

This is the Sennheiser Momentum, What Hi-Fi's 2013 Best portable headphones at £200-£300 price range. This is a closed full-size circumaural headphones designed to isolate against ambient noise.

For those of you who are not familiar with the classification, circumaural sits around your ears and not on it, so it gives you a more solid output (especially on the bass side) compared to the on-ear version.

SOUND
I've been using this for a couple of months now listening mostly to electronic dance music, rock, rnb, pop and classical, in both lossless (FLAC format) and lossy (MP3 @ 320kbps) audio formats, I must say it doesn't disappoint me one bit. The sound is really smooth and balanced from top to bottom. It offers full-bodied bass, clear mid-range and sparkling treble.

BUILD QUALITY
With a price tag of PHP 19,300 here in the Philippines, this is a headphone for the on-the-go lovers of sound who are willing to pay for premium sound coming from a fine piece of equipment. Sennheiser really did a great job on the Momentums. Everything about it screams PREMIUM.

The ear pads are made from the finest soft supple leather and because of that it doesn't give me that wet and sweaty feeling around my ears when I use it for long hours. They're very soft and comfortable to wear.

It has a metal-constructed earcup slider for maximum durability and custom fit. The head cushion is soft and is also wrapped with real leather for that consistent premium Sennheiser feel.

ACCESSORIES
It comes with 2 detachable cables. Embedded within the cable lies MOMENTUM’s sleek in-line control unit: providing complete control over your music and calls with a tilting plug. Crafted of fine metal to fit naturally within your fingertips. Specially designed to support Apple devices.

What's really cool about the Momentum's carrying case is that little cable compartment right in the middle of the case for easy storage.

BOTTOM LINE
Over-all I'm pretty much satisfied with this pair of cans. A bit pricey, but with that premium balanced sound, punchy bass but not over done, very stylish, light-weight, plus that comfortable and luxurious feel of the materials used in this headphones, I'd say it's worth every penny.
